I am essentially a rhetorician, in the classical sense: schooled in the art of persuasion. That means being able to tailor a message for maximum effect on a specific audience.

People sometimes express amazement that I can so perfectly capture an executive’s voice. I graciously accept the praise and don’t let on that that’s not what I’m doing. Sure, all my clients have their own cadence and vocabulary they’re comfortable with, and even some favorite turns of phrase. This will inform my work, but that's the least of it. Because a proper speech requires consciously crafted language. Most of the time, the client has some idea what message needs to be delivered. I add the craft, the rhetoric. The result is language elevated, but invisibly, so it doesn’t call attention to itself.

The process itself I like to think of as a dialectic between me and the client. It can be arduous but when all is said and done, I get a kick out of delivering a piece of writing (be it for the ear or the eye) that is right on target: organized, well designed, with just the right touch of eloquence.

You probably won’t be surprised to hear I was on the path to be a college English professor when I got sidetracked (fortunately!) into a corporate writing job, which has enabled me to use my knowledge and talents in ways that I’ve found quite rewarding. I bring to every assignment deep knowledge of how to use language effectively. And I’ll put that to work for you, whether you need a memo, a book, or anything in between.

Leave the words up to me. I will:

  • Craft a speech

  • Write an article

  • Pen an op-ed

  • Script a video

  • Research and write a book

If it involves words (and what doesn’t?), I’m here to help.

 Words About William

“Whether it was a speech or a letter, William always made me sound much more eloquent than I am. Just as important, he never lost patience with me even after far too many revisions!”

Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast Corporation

“From our very first project together, William impressed me as a writer with a great ear. I could always count on him to deliver a document that said what needed to be said with clarity and a perfect tone.”

Steve Burke, CEO, NBCUniversal, 2011-2020

“I worked with a lot of gifted writers over the years, but William was my favorite. I wouldn’t call him a mindreader, but he definitely had the ability to capture my thoughts and convert them into words that were just right for their intended audience.”

Bob Wright, CEO, NBC and NBC Universal, 1986-2006

“You are a word wizard!”

Here’s a link to my most recent book, an illustrated history of NBC’s activities within 30 Rockefeller Plaza from 1933 to 1975.

Here’s the cover of my first history book, from 2001. I wrote parts of it and edited and fact-checked the rest.

And here’s a photo of the corporate history I put together to celebrate Comcast’s acquisition of NBC Universal. It was distributed to 35,000 employees on the day the deal closed.
